US Squash Coaches Summit: why coaching belongs in facility planning

A forthcoming coaching summit underlines a practical point for squash facility buyers: the court should support the programme that will use it.

The industry update

US Squash has announced a Coaches Summit for 18 December in Philadelphia. Its October update describes collaborative sessions on coaching, participation and player development, with the specific venue to be confirmed closer to the event.

Ask the coaching team to review the layout

Facility planning often starts with a court count, but coaching operations add questions about session changes, observation and equipment storage. Involve the people running lessons before finalising the layout. A usable programme needs safe circulation and a clear place for people waiting for their session, in addition to the playing area.

For an existing conventional squash court, a glass back wall proposal should be checked against the retained construction and door arrangement. A rear wall package is not a complete refurbishment specification. Conditions of the existing front wall, side walls, floor and lighting should be reviewed separately by the project team.

Before you specify a court

Create a short use brief covering individual coaching, groups and member play. Share drawings or measured information with the supplier and identify what remains in place. Request a component schedule for the glass, door, supports and hardware, then assign responsibility for the surrounding work before placing an order.
